Summary

SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE from director Ridley Scott, starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver

The sensational true story of murder, madness, glamour, and greed that shook the Gucci dynasty

On March 27, 1995, Maurizio Gucci, heir to the fabulous fashion dynasty, was slain by an unknown gunman as he approached his Milan office。 In 1998, his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani Martinelli--nicknamed "The Black Widow" by the press--was sentenced to 29 years in prison, for arranging his murder。

Did Patrizia murder her ex-husband because his spending was wildly out of control? Did she do it because her glamorous ex was preparing to marry his mistress, Paola Franchi? Or is there a possibility she didn't do it at all?

The Gucci story is one of glitz, glamour, intrigue, the rise, near fall and subsequent resurgence of a fashion dynasty。 Beautifully written, impeccably researched, and widely acclaimed, The House of Gucci will captivate readers with its page-turning account of high fashion, high finance, and heart-rending personal tragedy。

5 stars for the story, but 3 stars for the writing, averages to a 4。 I loved reading about the Gucci family and what led to Maurizio’s murder, but it really got bogged down in the business and the author would hop around a lot chronologically to where it was a bit difficult to follow。 I am looking forward to seeing how the movie portrays the story。

Good on the family drama bits; dragged on the corporate history stuff and the epilogue was too long and unfocused。 The murder being woven throughout was a clever device。

I loved the way this was written。 It kept me interested when the subject matter did not。 Actually, that's only partially true。 The stories of hard work, entrepreneurial endeavors, and business drama were interesting - much like Shoe Dog and Red Notice - but high fashion is not my thing。 Kudos to the author for helping me get the whole story without requiring foreknowledge of Gucci and it's iconic bags and shoes。 I loved the way this was written。 It kept me interested when the subject matter did not。 Actually, that's only partially true。 The stories of hard work, entrepreneurial endeavors, and business drama were interesting - much like Shoe Dog and Red Notice - but high fashion is not my thing。 Kudos to the author for helping me get the whole story without requiring foreknowledge of Gucci and it's iconic bags and shoes。 。。。more

More ~*business intrigue*~ than murder, but a little of Patrizia goes a long way。 Beyond the horror of orchestrating a murder, truly a chore of a woman。 Excited for the movie!

It doesn't meet the expectation the title creates。 Only a tenth of the story focuses on the murder and case, while the rest focuses on the business changing hands。 It was really interesting, but wish the author was more honest about what the story entailed in the description。 It doesn't meet the expectation the title creates。 Only a tenth of the story focuses on the murder and case, while the rest focuses on the business changing hands。 It was really interesting, but wish the author was more honest about what the story entailed in the description。 。。。more

All I am up to is to know how this glamorous and luxury brand came out from its beginnings, so I read this book。 It was so fascinating to know how the great grand father Guccio Gucci buildt the brand。 But the cultural practice of sexism, which was so common at that time brought devastation to the family circle in terms of relationships。 He only gave to the male heirs his last will before he died and the females were excluded。 Yet next generation continued the practice。 Gave four stars for this b All I am up to is to know how this glamorous and luxury brand came out from its beginnings, so I read this book。 It was so fascinating to know how the great grand father Guccio Gucci buildt the brand。 But the cultural practice of sexism, which was so common at that time brought devastation to the family circle in terms of relationships。 He only gave to the male heirs his last will before he died and the females were excluded。 Yet next generation continued the practice。 Gave four stars for this book。 。。。more

I am Italian, love Gucci, and appreciate true crime, so I assumed The House Of Gucci would be a great read for me。 I loved learning about the Gucci empire and how the chaos of the Italian family who created it impacted the business。 This was a very detailed account of the company that was interesting to read。I may come across as a little bit of a dork here, but I actually enjoyed learning how Guccio Gucci, an Italian man without much money or prestige managed to create a world wide brand worth b I am Italian, love Gucci, and appreciate true crime, so I assumed The House Of Gucci would be a great read for me。 I loved learning about the Gucci empire and how the chaos of the Italian family who created it impacted the business。 This was a very detailed account of the company that was interesting to read。I may come across as a little bit of a dork here, but I actually enjoyed learning how Guccio Gucci, an Italian man without much money or prestige managed to create a world wide brand worth billions。 It was fascinating to learn about the progression of the textures used to create the flashy and well stitched canvas handbags, and the interwoven “Gs” that became the company symbol。 It was interesting to see how celebrities helped promote this brand, like Frank Sinatra’s ownership of 40 pairs of the signature leather loafers or the silk scarf created just for Princess Grace of Monaco。The infighting between the family members was brutal, and did reach a point where I was just tired of hearing about these people fighting over money and ownership percentages。 Still, the author was able to easily discuss how big names in fashion, like Tom Ford, made such an impact on the company。 I expected a bigger “sensational” element to the murder of Maurizio Gucci and the subsequent trial of his ex wife。 This was a mere 10% of the book, and so much less thrilling than I anticipated。Overall, this book had a lot of information but was not the true crime story I expected。 。。。more

This book was interesting and taught me a lot more than I had ever wanted to know about fashion brands, but I think I would have been better off if it were half the length because I got a bit bored。

Really enjoyed this book about the company and efforts to take it over。

Naturally I wanted to read this after finding out about the upcoming film。 I saw a lot of criticisms of this book including tons of mundane financial history about the companies and their deals, which yes, on one hand was not as salacious。 However, knowing nothing about the Gucci family (apart from the name being on products I will never desire to own) and fashion business, parts of it were pretty fascinating。 I had no idea Tom Ford was involved。 The stuff about the murder of Maurizio was bonker Naturally I wanted to read this after finding out about the upcoming film。 I saw a lot of criticisms of this book including tons of mundane financial history about the companies and their deals, which yes, on one hand was not as salacious。 However, knowing nothing about the Gucci family (apart from the name being on products I will never desire to own) and fashion business, parts of it were pretty fascinating。 I had no idea Tom Ford was involved。 The stuff about the murder of Maurizio was bonkers; it'll definitely make an interesting movie。 。。。more

This was excellent。 I never really kept up with news about Gucci (although I obviously saw some of the main headlines as they occurred), but this was really fascinating。 Frankly it reads like an opera, and I actually appreciated the details about the business (unlike some other reviewers) since their business was a roller coaster in all directions。 Regardless, there's a bit of everything for everyone, and it is updated for 2021 (originally written in 2010)。 Apparently they are making a movie of This was excellent。 I never really kept up with news about Gucci (although I obviously saw some of the main headlines as they occurred), but this was really fascinating。 Frankly it reads like an opera, and I actually appreciated the details about the business (unlike some other reviewers) since their business was a roller coaster in all directions。 Regardless, there's a bit of everything for everyone, and it is updated for 2021 (originally written in 2010)。 Apparently they are making a movie of this later this year, which will be interesting。 。。。more

Approximately 5% of this book is about the famous Gucci murder。 Instead, it was more of an economic history of the Gucci empire。 Definitely not what I expected and also not something I found enjoyable in any way。

Definitely not a *sensational* book。 It was interesting enough and had some rare moments of some wild stories but mostly it was really technical。 There was a ton of info about the development of the company, suppliers, business acquisitions, stocks, n other boring business shit。 I liked the family drama parts but it was too long and boring。 Idk where the “madness” part came in。 Title made it really hyped up and it was rather undeserved。 I liked reading before bed cause it helped me fall asleep。 Definitely not a *sensational* book。 It was interesting enough and had some rare moments of some wild stories but mostly it was really technical。 There was a ton of info about the development of the company, suppliers, business acquisitions, stocks, n other boring business shit。 I liked the family drama parts but it was too long and boring。 Idk where the “madness” part came in。 Title made it really hyped up and it was rather undeserved。 I liked reading before bed cause it helped me fall asleep。 I’ll still watch the movie when it’s available to stream。 Probably wouldn’t pay to see it in theaters cause I already spent enough on Gucci shit。 。。。more

Oh my Gucci! So, so good。 I had no idea how long Gucci has been around and how involved Tom Ford was after Maurizio’s murder。 If you love fashion houses, this is a must read!

Great as a business book - not what I expected。 Curious to see how they turn it into a movie about the Gucci murder as that is not the main focus of the book。 Still interesting and well written though

The House of Gucci tells the history of both the Gucci family and the Gucci company with the focus on providing context and background to the eventual murder of Maurizio Gucci by an unknown gunman in 1995。 In 1998 his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani-Martinelli was charged with arranging her husband’s murder。 I would describe this book as part fashion history, part corporate history and part true crime (though it’s not until about three quarters of the way in that we get to the killing and subsequent t The House of Gucci tells the history of both the Gucci family and the Gucci company with the focus on providing context and background to the eventual murder of Maurizio Gucci by an unknown gunman in 1995。 In 1998 his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani-Martinelli was charged with arranging her husband’s murder。 I would describe this book as part fashion history, part corporate history and part true crime (though it’s not until about three quarters of the way in that we get to the killing and subsequent trial of Maurizio’s wife)。 I enjoyed this book and learning about something I knew nothing about。 The author wrote the book in such a way that it was like sitting in on a conversation with the various family members, Gucci staff and law enforcement while also getting a look into their private thoughts。 My only complaint is that because the author provides so much detail I felt the narrative got bogged down by facts and I started to lose interest towards the end。 So this wasn’t a 5 star read for me but I’m really glad I picked it up! 。。。more

Solid biography。 Devoured the family drama of course but also appreciated descriptions about the evolution of the business and the human complexities that contributed/drove the evolution。 Excited to watch the Gaga movie!

Intriguing, detailed and well researched story of Gucci from the beginning through 2001, with a particular focus on the 1995 murder of Maurizio Gucci in Milan and the really extraordinary family dysfunction behind the scenes of the business。 I found it hard to put down。

Rhea

This is a fascinating story! But I can’t get past the poor writing。 I suppose I’ll just watch the Lady Gaga/Adam Driver movie!

Liz Analla

Overall, I liked the book and enjoyed the history of the family。 There was a bit too much detail for me on minor characters, acquisitions, and the stock market。

I really enjoyed this book, up until the murder。 After that (which was probably about 2/3 of the way through), the order really bounced around and I had a hard time following。 Additionally, I listened to the audiobook and did not like the narration, as the narrator did Italian accents for the people in the book, which came off as culturally insensitive。

Lisa

Sad this this focused on the business and shareholders and very little to do with the murder or family dynamics-

2。5 stars。 This book has an identity crisis。 It doesn't know if it wants to be a murder mystery, a fashion history or a business econ fashion takeover how to。 There were some very interesting points and the movie will, of course, be interesting as I assume it will mainly focus on the murder portion of the book。 But if you're not into business econ, you should skip this as it's 75% focused on the management of Gucci。 2。5 stars。 This book has an identity crisis。 It doesn't know if it wants to be a murder mystery, a fashion history or a business econ fashion takeover how to。 There were some very interesting points and the movie will, of course, be interesting as I assume it will mainly focus on the murder portion of the book。 But if you're not into business econ, you should skip this as it's 75% focused on the management of Gucci。 。。。more
